How are 3D Printed Animal Prosthetics Made?

3D Printed Animal Prosthetics

Here are Bionic Pets, we are well-known for creating both custom limb animal prosthetics and full limb animal prosthetics. Whether you have a duck missing a foot, a dog missing a paw, or any other animal missing an entire limb, we can create a prosthetic leg that allows him or her to be fully functional and mobile. Pet’s with front limb amputations are more likely to need a front leg prosthetic. This is especially true for dogs and cats, because these animals support 60% of their weight in their front legs. A missing front limb places a lot of additional stress on the remaining healthy leg. That being said, we can custom make a solution for any leg or foot. How do we do it? We use 3D printing!

Technology has improved leaps and bounds in recent years. Thanks to 3D printing, there are more solutions for your pet's mobility issues than ever before. This is wonderful news! Just like for humans, animals can greatly benefit from prosthetics and 3D printing makes this possible. In fact, Derrick Campana has dedicated his life to this mission.

How are They Made?

Every animal’s amputation or injury is unique, so their artificial limb needs to be custom made to fit them perfectly. We are able to do this because we've begun working with DiveDesign. Our exciting partnership with DiveDesign has allowed us to utilize 3D scanning, custom software, and 3D printing to make these futuristic prosthetics for your pet. Basically, a 3D printer works by extruding molten plastic through a tiny nozzle that it moves around precisely under computer control. It prints one layer, waits for it to dry, and then prints the next layer on top. It's a bit more complicated than this, but this gives you a good general idea of how it works.

The jackets that get used for both the prosthetics and carts are made from TPU (Thermoplastic Urethane). This is lightweight, skin safe, breathable, semi-flexible, durable, and waterproof. Using traditional human-grade prosthetic components and pair them with either a custom shock-absorbing foot or cart setup depending on the case. That's right, if we end up deciding that a prosthetic limb isn't the best solution for your pet, we can custom-make a cart to restore their mobility instead.
